If anyone is tempted to pull the covers up over your head and never come out, you are not alone! It’s tempting to isolate, disconnect, and give up. As with most paths to recovery, it’s often feet first, then the mind and heart will follow. I’ve decided to literally move my feet first by joining others for a special Friday morning mindfulness walk.
Walkers report finding power in a shared silence experience –breathing, walking, observing –that penetrates layers of assumptions, anxieties, and mental blocks. If you are repeatedly running a movie in your head and rehashing the past or stressing out about the future, you can achieve mental clarity, insight, and calm by practicing active mindfulness while walking unexplored areas.
Walking with intention allows common things to take on new beauty, complex things to come into focus, and people to be understood within the story of their lives. After each walk, walkers gather for a few minutes of conversation and share observations and insights, so all walkers benefit from the insights of the group.
If you are disheartened by our divided nation or nervous about an uncertain future, join us this Friday morning, and together we can walk our way back to community.
