Walking to Church – Reflection on Walk #3, Yr 3 along the Fancher Creek Trail

February 15, 2017February 22, 2017 By fmw

Saturday morning, February 11, 2017, the group of Fresno Mindfulness Walkers met at the Denny’s at Clovis Ave. and Inyo, just north of Kings Canyon.  Inyo connects to the Fancher Creek Canal trail, and walkers strolled along full and flowing creek and then canal banks for almost 2 miles to Church Avenue, and then back.

After the walk, walkers gathered for a few moments to share their observations:  Many people out on the trail enjoying nature.  Exceptionally clean and void of trash thanks to the efforts of the Fancher Creek maintenance crews and Tree Fresno.  Trees along the creek banks were labeled like in an arboretum.  Span of older trees and then newer banks and landscaping.  Signs of duck mating season.  Crossing Kings Canyon is like entering an enchanted forest. Walkers were pleasantly surprised to encounter 4 gentlemen seated in a circle playing cards on a cardboard box next to the rushing of creek water into the canal.  Walkers noticed birds, including Kill Deer.  Walkers saw goats and heard roosters.  Much of the ground was soaked from the recent rains, and walkers noticed the different sounds and textures of the earth beneath our feet.  Walkers noticed a blue tarp covering a person with a dog sitting alongside under some oleanders near the edge of the canal.  Walkers saw 2 unopened jugs of milk cooling in the creek under the railroad track crossing.

What a beautiful walk! A big thank you to the community group that helps maintain it.  Linda

It was such a joy to walk along that water. It was interesting to see the neighbors who embrace the canal by setting out chairs and viewing platforms (and even putting up a lovely tree swing for all to enjoy). It is surprising that there were also those who put up big fences to set themselves apart from the canal. Beautiful trees, wildlife, and clean trails made it a very pleasant walk.   Enjoying the amazing power of water!!  Kathryn Johnsen

Fresno has water! To walk this route: Park at Clovis Ave and Inyo in the Denny’s parking lot -just north of kings canyon. Walk down Inyo to catch the trail south for as far as you’d like to walk.   Lori

Such an interesting walk…a beautiful day in our rain washed community.  Judith

Great Saturday. I so look forward to these walks.  Liz

I felt connected to mother earth right here in the middle of an urban area.  Irene

I think you found one of the coolest places to walk in Fresno. Looks like you’re on Fancher Creek between Kings Canyon and Butler, right?  Everardo    Yes, Everardo, you are right!

UPCOMING WALK: Saturday, January 29, 2022, 10 a.m.

Fresno Mindfulness Walks will lead a Saturday morning walk on January 29, 2022, beginning at 10 am. at 271 N. Glenn Ave., Fresno, CA 93701 (the home of Craig Scharton).

The walk will be about 3 miles, at a stroll to medium pace, occasionally on uneven ground, and take about an hour and a half. By walking mindfully and without talking, we will experience the Lowell neighborhood in new ways. At the conclusion of the walk, we’ll gather back at Craig’s yard and spend a few minutes talking about what we discovered about ourselves and the neighborhood.
Walks are free and require no RSVP. Look for the Facebook event to share with your friends. For email notifications, sign up in the yellow bar at the top.

How FMW works —

Fresno Mindfulness Walks are weekly opportunities for people to walk together for a 4 mile route through a different Fresno neighborhood each week. Walkers practice active mindfulness by attending to the sights, sounds, smells, feelings.  Walkers do not talk to each other on walks, but we do greet people we meet along the way.  The walk location and exact start time are posted just a few days in advance. All walks are free, require no RSVP, and anyone is welcome to join one walk or many. To learn about upcoming walks, you can sign up for a weekly email in the yellow bar at the top of this website and/or LIKE and follow the FMW Facebook page.

To learn about the routine that begins each walk and read some of the resources that have inspired FMW, check out the resources page.

Weekly walks are about 4 miles and take about an hour and a half. Walks are at a medium pace, often on uneven ground, and sometimes take longer than expected because walkers see themselves as curious travelers lingering to observe or going around a different way.
