“If everyone could see what we see” – Walk 8, Yr 3, Edison High School and ‘The Little Airport That Could’, 3/18/17

March 19, 2017 By fmw

Saturday morning, March 18, 2017, a dozen mindfulness walkers strolled 4 miles through west Fresno neighborhoods.  One of the FMWalkers reported, “I walked in West Fresno and saw St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, blooming neighborhoods, Chandler Airport ticket booth, quirky houses, and Kearney Boulevard. I always feel wonderful and full of God after a walk.”  Another FMWalker shared that she had lived in Fresno since the 1950s, and had never known where Edison High School was located, much less walked the campus.  Walkers indicated this is not unique, and after seeing the impressive Edison High School campus, walkers wished everyone could see Edison and experience the beauty and history of West Fresno.  “It is a missed opportunity that people have not been more exposed to all areas of Fresno schools, including west Fresno.”

Walkers talked about what they observed:  wonderfully wide roads where you can do a U-turn without a 3-point turn.  New housing developments.  Grateful to see Edison High School and meet the actors rehearing for the musical, HairSpray.  After living here decades, walkers talked about having never walked the gorgeous streets and the entrance to Kearney Boulevard.  One walker described walking past his grandfather’s house on Merced Ave.  Memories!  Walkers were impressed with the clean school campus at Edison.  Walkers wondered about the sign on Bethune Charter school  – “an endeavor fund school.”  Walkers saw alleys and commented that they were better kept than many throughout Fresno.

One walker reported:  “I’m happy for this walk since I’m very familiar with these areas. My daughter went to Edison and I have friends who live here, and I have picked up friends at Chandler Airport.  I’m so pleased to see it well kept.  I’m glad this group of walkers can see it.  Some of my friends won’t come here. If more people see it, they will know that it’s not scary.”

The Chandler airport is fabulous!  The terminal is wonderfully decorated.  This airport was used in an Indiana Jones movie.  Walkers were happy to meet Patty and Henry who run the Flight Line Cafe.  Walkers talked about coming back here for breakfast or lunch.

Smells:  good food in the Flight Line Cafe, wisteria, fresh cut grass.  Walkers heard birds, mowers, traffic, small plane engines.

Walkers watched a beautiful young girl and her family taking photos before a quinceaniera at St. Alphonsus Church.

These are our brothers and sisters in Fresno.  All of our lives and futures are tied together.  Let this idea influence our conversations and decisions throughout the week.

UPCOMING WALK: Saturday, January 29, 2022, 10 a.m.

Fresno Mindfulness Walks will lead a Saturday morning walk on January 29, 2022, beginning at 10 am. at 271 N. Glenn Ave., Fresno, CA 93701 (the home of Craig Scharton).

The walk will be about 3 miles, at a stroll to medium pace, occasionally on uneven ground, and take about an hour and a half. By walking mindfully and without talking, we will experience the Lowell neighborhood in new ways. At the conclusion of the walk, we’ll gather back at Craig’s yard and spend a few minutes talking about what we discovered about ourselves and the neighborhood.
Walks are free and require no RSVP. Look for the Facebook event to share with your friends. For email notifications, sign up in the yellow bar at the top.

How FMW works —

Fresno Mindfulness Walks are weekly opportunities for people to walk together for a 4 mile route through a different Fresno neighborhood each week. Walkers practice active mindfulness by attending to the sights, sounds, smells, feelings.  Walkers do not talk to each other on walks, but we do greet people we meet along the way.  The walk location and exact start time are posted just a few days in advance. All walks are free, require no RSVP, and anyone is welcome to join one walk or many. To learn about upcoming walks, you can sign up for a weekly email in the yellow bar at the top of this website and/or LIKE and follow the FMW Facebook page.

To learn about the routine that begins each walk and read some of the resources that have inspired FMW, check out the resources page.

Weekly walks are about 4 miles and take about an hour and a half. Walks are at a medium pace, often on uneven ground, and sometimes take longer than expected because walkers see themselves as curious travelers lingering to observe or going around a different way.
